This class will provide students with an in-depth look at the criminal justice system in the United States. Topics covered include the definition and elements of a crime; the role of police; how the court system works; the purpose of Corrections; and ways to improve how justice is obtained in this country.  Classroom discussions focus on pertinent current events, Supreme Court cases, and infamous criminal trials. Students will hear from guest speakers and participate in field trips to the police department, courts, and/or corrections. A highlight of the class is the Mock Trial, where students will play the part of prosecutors, defense attorneys, and witnesses. This class is recommended for those who have an interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement or the legal field, or for anyone who wants to learn more about crime, individual rights, and how an offender goes through our justice system. Students who complete the class may apply for the Cadet Program with Conway PD or an internship with the Carroll County Prosecutor’s Office.


Running Start enables high school students to enroll in Introduction to Criminal Justice for a significantly reduced tuition rate and receive college credit through White Mountain Community College (WMCC).
